Role Summary
The Marine Judge Advocate program offers law students and licensed attorneys the opportunity to practice law with immediate responsibility and a commission as a Marine Officer. In the 8th District, we seek candidates who are ready to step into a courtroom and handle high-level litigation, military justice, and international law early in their careers.
Key Responsibilities

- Litigation & Military Justice: Serve as Trial or Defense Counsel in courts-martial, gaining significant trial experience far earlier than in the civilian sector.
- Administrative & Civil Law: Advise on labor law, ethics, and environmental law, and provide legal assistance to Marines and their families.
- Operational & International Law: Provide real-time legal advice to commanders regarding the Law of Armed Conflict and Rules of Engagement during global operations.
- Professional Development: Attend the Naval Justice School in Newport, RI, to specialize in the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).
Qualifications & Requirements

- U.S. Citizenship: Required for commission.
- Education: Currently enrolled in or a graduate of an ABA-accredited law school.
- LSAT: Minimum 150 score (waivers considered for candidates with exceptional academic or leadership backgrounds).
- Physical Standards: Must pass the Marine Corps PFT and meet the physical standards required of all commissioned officers.
- Bar Admission: Must be admitted to practice in any U.S. state (students apply during law school; commissioning occurs after bar certification).
Program/Commissioning Paths:

- PLC-Law: For 1L and 2L students. Includes one 10-week paid summer session at OCS and potential for internship opportunities.
- OCC-Law: For 3Ls or practicing attorneys who are ready to begin training immediately after bar results.
